"Poland deserves its own steel" - this conclusion resonated during the press conference announcing a new industry event: the European Steel Congress STEEL 2023, organized by the #RIG, which will take place on September 18-19, 2023, at the International Congress Center in Katowice. The project initiators presented its objectives and goals.
"As the Ministry of State Assets, we aim to shape a modern steel industry within State Treasury companies. The project to build a new electric and environmentally friendly steel plant and rolling mill in Ruda Śląska for 5 billion Polish zlotys is underway. I hope that the Congress will create a platform for knowledge exchange, experiences, and inspiration for all recipients and users of the steel market," emphasized Marek Wesoły, Secretary of State in the Ministry of State Assets, Government Plenipotentiary for the transformation of energy and coal mining companies.
With 30 hours of speeches, discussions, meetings, and networking during #STEEL2023, the event aims to showcase that steel is one of the strategic industries for the economy.
"Steel is essential in the construction, automotive, armament, and road infrastructure sectors. Currently, steel consumption in Poland exceeds our production capabilities. We need to rebuild the supply chain. Capital from outside Europe (including India, China, Iran, Japan) should not be solely responsible for this industry. We would like to participate more strongly in this industry as a producer and discuss solutions that will lead to it during the Congress," explained Tomasz Heryszek, CEO of Węglokoks S.A. - General Partner of the Congress.
The Congress also aims to build awareness of joint action towards "green" transformation.
"At the Congress, we also want to discuss what the steel industry can offer to recipients and workers in this sector. We want to invite young people who are facing life choices to participate. We want to showcase innovations in this industry that impact energy efficiency. It is worth mentioning that steel fits into a circular economy. It is the only material that is 100% recyclable," added Marek Akciński, Vice President of the Management Board for the Capital Group of Węglokoks S.A.
"We have the ambition for this to be the most important event dedicated to steel not only in Poland but also in Europe. Many companies belonging to RIG operate in this industry. At the Congress, we want to present the knowledge of experts to demonstrate the strength and development prospects of the steel industry. We have experience in building such events. We invite everyone to cooperate," concluded Tomasz Zjawiony, President of the Regional Chamber of Commerce in Katowice, Organizer of the Congress.
