#STEEL_TALK: Maciej Kawecki, PhD
18.09.2023, MON
2:00 pm - 3:00 pm,
Conference room 23

#STEEL_TALK:

  • dr Maciej Kawecki - „Już nie twórca, a stwórca” [No longer a maker, but a creator]

The first part of the presentation will be devoted entirely to data. In it, I will show what power data has today. In what direction is the world of their collection going today. What impact does the provision of artificial intelligence has on us. Will Chat GPT and other parallel emerging artificial intelligences affect the disappearance of some professions. We will confirm the thesis that such ubiquitous access to artificial intelligence is greater than the emergence of the Internet, the rise of home PCs or even social media. We will answer the question of what direction artificial intelligence can take. Will traditional search engines stay with us. What is the success of the GPT Chat and is it the greatest artificial intelligence available to all. In what follows, we will take a journey through technologies being developed in Poland and around the world that seek to solve five major crises - health care, climate, relations, raw materials and the economy. These will be the most beautiful examples of technologies in my opinion that meet today's needs and are well ahead of today's world. And it's all thanks to the data that connects all the technological trends to which I devote my book. At the very end of the lecture, I will talk about my visit to London to the headquarters of DeepMind, the creators of AlphaFold. The lecture will be capped with the thesis that any technological solution today should be viewed optosceptically.

Presentation:

  • dr Maciej Kawecki - Digital EU Ambassador, Pro-rector of WSB in Warsaw, President of the Lem Institute, technology popularizer and enthusiast,

Technology popularizer, science journalist appointed by the European Commission as EU Digital Ambassador. President of the Lem Institute.
Pro-rector for innovation at the Warsaw School of Banking. Author of the "This is IT" technology channel on Youtube and the makeway.co.uk blog. He is betting on a man who understands that technology is only and as much as a tool in his hands, with which he should positively change the world. Promotes what is Polish and innovative.

Possibility of a trip to the Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzow

18.09.2023, MON
5:30 pm - 8:00 pm,

The Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzow began its operations in November 2021. This is the first museum in Poland fully dedicated to the tangible and intangible heritage of the iron and steel industry during the Industrial Revolution. Until now, no facility has exhibited to such an extent the history of one of the most important industries shaping the face of Upper Silesia.

The museum is located in a revalued building of a historic power plant dating back to 1895 on the site of the former "Królewska"/"Kościuszko" steelworks in the very center of Chorzów. The oldest part of the building, where the museum operates, was built in 1895, and originally housed the power plant of the Royal Steelworks, which provided power to the city of Königsberg from 1898 to 1911.

The permanent exhibition "Kingdom of Iron", which can be admired at the Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzow, is an innovative and novel exposition, which is largely based on machinery from the Batory and Royal Steelworks, and the protagonists of the exhibition, thanks to the "Talk to me metallurgy" project, are former employees of these plants. In September 2022, the exhibition was recognized in the 42nd edition of the "Sibyl" Competition for the Museum Event of the Year as one of the three best exhibitions in Poland. The tour is complemented by a one-of-a-kind film screening shown in an unusual movie theater with a semi-circular screen. The special effects accompanying the projection draw you right into the middle of the heated smelter.

The Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzow is a member of ERIH, the European Route of Industrial Heritage, which presents more than 2,000 monuments of technology adapted for tourism and culture in all European countries. It is Europe's largest industrial tourism-oriented cultural cooperation network and is also the Council of Europe's European Cultural Route.

With its unique architecture and atmosphere, the Museum of Metallurgy in Chorzow is a unique place with potential that is a must-see.

Scrap as a strategic raw material in the transformation of the steel sector
19.09.2023, TUE
10:15 am - 11:15 am,
Ballroom B

Panel leader:

  • dr hab. inż. Mariola Saternus - Faculty of Materials Engineering, Department of Metallurgy and Recycling, Silesian University of Technology

Despite the crucial importance of scrap metal to the successful decarbonization of the steel sector and its value chain, it is the most frequently exported waste stream from the EU to third countries. In addition, most target countries do not have environmental and social standards equivalent to Europe's. This situation threatens both Europe's strategic autonomy and its climate goals.

It would therefore be necessary to ensure access to all critical materials used in steelmaking: such as nickel, manganese, molybdenum, vanadium, titanium, chromium, cobalt, silicon, copper and aluminum, but also secondary materials such as ferrous scrap in the long term, the recyclability and circulation of these materials should be improved and innovative solutions promoted.

During the panel, we will explore how to effectively use scrap metal as a valuable raw material for steelmaking, reducing the consumption of natural resources and environmental impact. Learn how modern scrap acquisition and processing technologies are helping to create a more efficient and environmentally friendly steel industry.

During the panel, we will talk about the following issues, among others:

  • What to do to stop scrap in the EU or even in PL?
  • Does our legislation support trade in scrap goods (SENT)?
  • Scrap from Ukraine (how to approach cooperation with Ukrainian suppliers?)

The Art of Business Etiquette
19.09.2023, TUE
10:15 am - 11:15 am,

When to hand out a business card, who greets you first and what does the dress code really mean? There are no coincidences in business etiquette.
"Business etiquette" is a set of informal rules, norms, conventions and expectations for behavior in a business environment. It's a kind of cultural code of behavior that governs interactions between employees, customers, business partners and others operating within or in relation to the organization.

Familiarizing yourself with them will help facilitate communication and find your way through difficult, unfamiliar situations.

It covers many aspects, such as:

  • Communications
  • Appearance and clothing
  • Meetings and negotiations
  • Behavior in the workplace and at external meetings
  • Business correspondence
  • Time management
  • Discretion

Business etiquette can vary depending on culture, industry and local customs. Following the rules of business etiquette can help build lasting business relationships, increase professionalism and ensure a positive corporate image.

Hydrogen economy as a way to develop the steel industry

19.09.2023, TUE
11:30 am - 12:30 pm,
Ballroom C

Managing the panel:

  • Dariusz Kryczka - Senior Manager at EY Law firm in the Energy and Sustainability Team. Energy and climate expert

The EU forecasts that in 2042 hydrogen consumption within its member states will be about 60 times higher than today, but interest in the resource may significantly exceed production capacity. There is talk of up to a 300-fold increase in hydrogen use compared to 2022.
The use of hydrogen in the economy has great potential and can play an important role in the energy transition and in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Poland is one of the countries where undertaking the establishment of a hydrogen economy is not only reasonable, but even necessary.
Produced using renewable energy, hydrogen is a clean energy source that does not generate carbon dioxide emissions or other harmful substances. It can be used as an energy source in the transportation sector, including hydrogen vehicles and hydrogen-powered trains. It is used in various industrial processes, including steelmaking or chemistry as an alternative energy source to replace fossil fuels. While the use of hydrogen has potential, there are also technological and economic challenges associated with the efficiency of hydrogen production, transportation and storage. The development of the hydrogen economy requires significant investment in infrastructure, research into new technologies and regulations that support its use. The use of hydrogen in the economy can be an important part of the energy transition and the fight against climate change, but its successful implementation requires close cooperation between many communities.
